SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a peptide that goes straight to the inner membrane of the mitochondria and protects cardiolipin, the lipid that holds the cell's energy machinery together. Overview
SS-31 was developed by Hazel Szeto at Weill Cornell Medicine together with Peter Schiller, as one of the Szeto-Schiller peptides. It concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane at up to 5,000 times its level outside and binds cardiolipin, the lipid that holds the electron transport chain in place and keeps ATP production running.In September 2025 the FDA granted accelerated approval to elamipretide, under the name Forzinity, for Barth syndrome, a genetic disease in which cardiolipin is faulty. It has also been studied in a Phase 3 trial in primary mitochondrial myopathy (MMPOWER-3) and in clinical research on heart failure and kidney disease.As mitochondria weaken with age, SS-31 works right at the source of cellular energy.
