Overview
Semax is a seven-amino-acid peptide developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow: the ACTH(4-7) fragment extended with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail that protects it from rapid breakdown. It keeps the brain-related activity of its parent hormone without the hormone's effect on the adrenal glands.In rat studies, Semax raised BDNF levels in the hippocampus, the brain region central to learning and memory, and it has been studied for its effect on dopamine signalling and for neuroprotection under low oxygen. In Russia it is used in medical practice, including after ischaemic stroke, where it was examined in a controlled study of 110 patients.Unlike classic stimulants, Semax does not noticeably raise heart rate or blood pressure at typical doses.
